For the last two weeks I worked with the second year I was paired with Candi. Her project is a cartoony 3d sci-fi comedy about a woman and her cat and the bond that they share. I didnt do any animating for the project but I did produce a 3D model of the suitcase the main character uses. I modelled it in parts as this is an easier way to model I also wanted to make sure the poly-count was low as it would be cartoonish so no need for higher detail. I also went and UV mapped it and put a test texture on it to possibly add in a bump map, but I discovered my attempt at a uv map didn't work so it pretty much failed. I also did some motion graphics for the spaceship UI although I didn't get as much done as I wanted to but I did find a couple of resources for it that should be useful. Did most of the communication through emails which worked well enough except for a time where I thought it was odd that I hadn't got any updates or a response to my last message for a couple days when I then discovered I had some how been getting emails from Candi going to my spam folder which wasn't that helpful. I also went to the old operating theatre to see Julie Mathias to get some advice/ direction on the micro short animation project I will be doing for them. Started working on the (framing disease/ filming historical perspective) essay haven't really got that far yet but going try to base it around tb as from my research a lot of diseases in films are fictional zombie/infection/outbreak which is really generic and they don't really have a clear portrayal of history and the second most common film disease types were things to do with the mental disease parkinson's and alzheimer's. Wanting to move away from those subjects and also concentrate on something that's animated I have chosen to do when the wind rises the ghibli film. My blogging has been quite shit recently so I will try and update with stuff from I think the last three weeks. On the second to the last life drawing field trip I went to waterloo station.
With the point of it being to capture the movement of people and the perspective and space of the environment that they were in. I kept forgetting to draw the floor so it looked like pepole were skating on ice but oh well. Lastly I remember it was very cold I also discovered that you could buy coffee at burger king it was really bad.. never again.
Would of done more but my hand was turning to stone and it was warm in burger king.
Last week on the 22nd went to the Gordon Museum of Pathology at Guys Hospital and then the Old Operating Theatre Museum. At the gordon museum I got to see a lot of morbid things like dismbebered body parts and rotting flesh, lungs skulls e.t.c it was pretty gross, this was for the new project of researching a disease and make an animation about it for the clients at the old operating theatre not sure how helpfull it was no pictures were aloud but I did start a brief drawing of couple people but then we had to leave.
Also went to the huntarian on wednesday was pretty much similar to the gordon museum but with more animals didnt feel like drawing much that day. And I also went to british museum where I felt like drawing even less but I will probably go back eventually it was really packed and people kept leaning over my shoulder when I was trying to draw which put me off even more.
And lastly there was the assessment work I handed in that I was not that happy about it I plan to redo/improve all of them I also ended up having less 3d as files corrupting ruined it a bit like my mood change work which I ended up doing on assessment day in 20 mins in stop motion instead.

And that green screen composite I did well at least I can say the background I made was nice I wont upload that though for reasons.
Yeah think that's about it.
Lip syncing Tests Will upload this if I can find it/if I didnt already animate over the test in tv paint and delete it.
My two lip syncs:??
The project next term will be for the Huntarian Museum and the Old Operating Theatre Museum doing an animation for young people from around 8 to 20+ to get them more informed about a certain disease. My disease that I was chosen to do is for the disease called TB(tuberculosis) also formerly know as consumption, phthisis or the white plague. It was a much more serious and life threating diseas in the 1800's to the early 1920s
TB is a baterical based infection that is mainly spread from inhaling really tiny viral loads of microbes from coughs or sneezes from an infected person. It mainly effects the lungs but can effect the entire body. Having a persistent cough with possibly bloody phlegm, weight loss, night sweating, high temperatures fatigue and swellings can all be the signs and symptoms of contracting this disease. Its unlikely to get the most contagious type of TB the lung type from brief exposure from an infected person but you are more likely to contract it if you have constant close proximity to it. Like living in the same house hold. Your also more at risk if you not surprisingly have a poor immune system and apparently according to who.int about 1/3 of the world are infected with tb of october 2015.
Latent TB is also possible by the immune system not killing or containing the infection and not displaying the symptoms which can then spread to the lungs and other parts of the body.
The BCG vaccine can provide effective protection against TB in up to 8 out of 10 people who are given it and hopefully I would be one of those who it works for cause otherwise im gonna have a bad time.
Went to the natural history museum for maybe the fourth time looked at some stuff Was cool.
Choosing an animal and its character
2:10 I choose this animals video as the title seemed interesting. The feelings I get from the crane are brave confident and confrontational its character would be a creature that likes fighting and challenging stronger opponents. Key poses would be the overall shape being small and then expanding when its ready for a fight.

Over the christmas period I worked on my circus walk cycle which resulted in me changing the entire walk to be more dramatic as well as the design of the character. I didnt like the clothing design of my character so I somehow came to the logical conclusion of her becoming a ninja which actually fits the backstory. I also struggled with the face and increase workload with the movement I had chosen so I covered up alot of her face. I copy and pasted the head but it looked jerky so I had to redraw that area a couple times which fixed the problem slightly but not entirely. Also the scarf thing looked cool but was weird when it didnt move so I rushed through that section. It could be better but I did okay I think.
I tried to break down a animation of jessica rabbit my insipration for my orginal walk cycle. I then broke down my original walk cycle and tried to find a happy medium between the two. The revison and revisiting jessica rabbits walk was prompted by my mentor who suggested more torso movement which is what I think I achieved Probably a bit to much but meh. Also more hip movement that I wanted to put across.

The last week of uni assessments Handed in what I had done bouncing creature, push/lift/pull(none fully finished) rushed 2d mood change that I did on the day and my circus character mood sheet(that is partially unfinished as I had to include scans that I cut out on the model sheet.
My circus character is a innuit girl that was left in her youth taken in and raised by a travelling Maori circus troupe that teaches her various acro and aerobatics and the art of fire poi. After finally learning of her actual origin years later as a teenager she goes on a journey to find her mother learning various things she returns to find her adopted circus family dead seemingly organized by her estranged mother. She is now on a pursuit of vengance with renewed passion to find and confront her mother and thats a basic backstory. I think.
This is part of the unfinished 3d walk cycle mood change I was doing but didn't get to finish as there was problems with the file corrupting.[vimeo]https://vimeo.com/148639196[/vimeo]
Fixed 2d walk cycle that I did the week before
Push animation that has some problems in it like the knee twtiching for example and I think it needs a bit more exaggeration.
Did a movement class a bit to help with our four legged creature creation project but I couldn't do much as I had a previous leg injury from a week prior. An injury which crawling around didn't really help but still helpful I guess.
I also tried a stop motion dog animation which I just remembered is on someone else's hard-drive..
Mood changes basically Tasked with making a walk and having the character react to something like a sign post which then changes the characters mood therefore changing there walking style.
And the last life drawing class
Im also trying to finishing walk cycle in and my character photoshop by drawing over the frames I did.
Walky cycles This was the week of walk cycles which can be quite difficult. I found this to be challenging mostly for the reason of having the actually circus character to be using the walk cycle only partially completed. As I had not really completed the body or thought of appropriate clothing also I probably need it to match the back story of my character although I could just choose a random outfit and say they are cosplaying.
I managed to get at least half of my walk done but still need to integrate my character on to the line test.
I similarly made progress with my character walk in maya but is yet to be finished. This is how far I got 3Dladywalk
Life drawing:Model Jennifer Field
This week was to do with movement more like pose to pose and our own movement around the model getting different perspectives from an equal amount of distance. I found it to not be difficult but mostly tedious in particular the last exercise where we sat in a circle and exchanged seats and drew the different perspectives of the same pose for a whole hour.
Second week of thinking about character concepts are group ended up doing some work with what I believe was soft clay and also trying to caricature inanimate objects. The workshop was done by Graeme Howard.
The first attempt at clay was this weird dragon turtle reptile thing with a hat that I put some effort into making but didnt really like so much. So after awhile I ended up just making weird clay stuff that I didn't really put much thought into like a female body and a weird mario head.
Randomly combining them as the female didn't have a head I didn't think much of it afterwards. But after some reflection and presenting what we had made I realised I actually had a viable potential candidate (kind off) for my circus character a lady with a guys face and no arms or legs that with a pet dragon turtle thing that resulted from me zoning out.
I presented my film analysis this week, for my chosen film the illusionist I didn't get as much time to practice it as I hoped but I think it went fairly well. The Film I presented
Things I don't think I got to mention like this juxtaposition of color the warm tones of the table where magic is revealed to be not real and the female protagonist looks into the cold harsh toned reality that the illusionist has disappeared into. Which I thought was interesting
This was what I believed to be a camera shot representing the illusionist leaving as the train was moving to the left which I think is a negative direction. Also the black of the train could represent a death of his career and a going back to what he was doing before he became an entertainer.
And this like the last is also a closing scene where the female main character who I think is called alice goes of towards the right of the screen in a more positive forward direction while placing her white coat bought by the illusionist to shelter her and her new male suitor. The whiteness of the coat could signify a new beginning fresh start of life, or her leaving the memories of the illusionist in the past .
The last slide of my presentation "I believed that this film doesn't exactly have an intended audience. And was more of an insight into a man mind and personal feelings about his daughter. Although after looking at others opinions many feel that slyvain has taken over a bit too much and assimilated himself into the story too much not displaying enough tati like his comedy and flair. I think the director just wanted his feelings to be shown as he got engrossed in the script as he noted the similarities to his own daughter from a previous marriage.
Overall I think the film could be for anyone as it deals with aspects of longing and hope(the girl following the protag and hoping magic is real and him longing to improve the life of another or even hope that his trade will get him somewhere, Growth and development of the two main characters and the change of a teen to adulthood and an adult to elderhood making the decision to prepare and make way for the transitioning youth. After watching the film a second time I understood the characters more and even subtle moments of the illusionist's magic being slight of hand. I can see why the illusionist takes alice in and the alice not purposely being a leech like character and genuinely believing in his magic to be able to produce things out of thin air so money would not be an actually"
This was me trying to do work on my circus character to prepare for the walk cycle I only got so far as an young and adult version. My character is a female who I want to make be of Inuit descent because why not. The act my performer does is mainly areo/acrobatics and a bit of fire twirling or fire poi which will be taught to my character by a family of maori that are apart of the circus act my character was in. (also mental note keep forgetting to put birth mark on characters cheek)
Did more life drawing exercises:Model Adrian
This week was more to do with body language and a bit of perspective too "character of the figure". We tried to emulate different types of textures like tangled, wet or soft and also different types of line. As i suppose was to do with different lines and textures define what it is you are drawing whether its a character or not. Hard lines could mean strong while soft lines might mean gentle or shaky lines could represent chaos or some sort of disruption. We also did different moods which accompanied lines.
Did a helpful workshop with a lady called Penelope Mendonca that got the group to think about character design in another way especially with other people contributing to the initial idea and concept of a character. And creating back story and futures for these characters not just on a visual standpoint but there environment and the looks of their own family or how they would interact or meet other peoples characters.
Worked on the pushing exercise on maya. Which I will post on here if I remember to do a playblast or render
Did more life drawing a selection of drawings I did. Model:Esther Bunting
This was to do with perspective like seeing the model from a high place or lower down like being a child looking up at a resting mother. The last set of poses of her we had to do where she would move around the room in a circuit was quite challenging as she moved she would constantly change poses and would mess around which was entertaining at least
Past work I have done
I wanted to improve as a digital artist through trying to learn how to handle color values better and the subtleties of light and dark. After painting I coloured it with a color layer as it handles the values better it was quite challenging to get the values right and I don't think I have done this completely but I have gotten it pretty close to the original source material picture of Ronda rousey. I finished this a couple weeks ago
Previous 3d work I did this is popular car I modelled and rendered in Maya the project scope was originally a model under 5K i think but I chose the alternative of a object inside another object with no poly limit for my previous uni project. Had three point lighting and a HDR texture on the car. I later on modelled some car dice to put inside the car but I didn't get to do an interior or do an alternative worn car and post apocalyptic environment like I planned due to rendering issues with a turntable (that had a wire frame) that went up to the extended deadline. I got an A for my presentation when presenting this.
This is a line test I did for my final year project at Kingston university. Project didnt end well I was indecisive did at least 30 different variation and ran out of time this was orginally a 3d project before I switched it to a 2D/3D then a 2d one. I even got rid of the inner details I did on my main character and just had a outline when I thought it looked better but didn't do it for some scenes which left different parts looking quite different.
A scene for a game I co created with a partner at kingston university for one of our crossover modules. We thought of the main mechanic a side scrolling runner. I came up with the characters designs, title, concept and I did the animation as well, most of the assets creation which were png sprites that I animated using a unitys puppet tool. And my partner did the programming and music and text elements and also some visual effects. The concept was a bear sick of the rules of society running around naked getting chased by a cop that you have to avoid. It was called teddy bare(you get it its because he's naked and he's bare but also.. a bear, I was really proud when I thought of this stupid game title)
And lastly a bit of vfx stuff I did in after effects GottaGoFast!
Seven questions for my circus character will probably finish it properly later.
1. Who am I?
Flexible funny angry clown drifts from place to place never really settling looking for a place to belong. Whenever they go they settle for a time but any feelings of comfortability soon get replaced by boredom and a need to escape to find another adventure casting aside any previous ties
2.Where am I?
Im on a boat
Five in the afternoon
4.What do I want?
5.Why do I want this?
who doesnt want the booty
6.How will I achieve my goal
Manipulation and mind games
7.What must I overcome
Stuff that happened Last week went to see the second years project pitching for a animated interputation of some opera plays with the best getting chosen to be produced with fellow students in there class. Of the ones I saw all were quite good with a lot of thought being put into there pitches I later attended the animated night of the opera showcasing the previous chosen pitches from the the students who had graduated it was pretty good slighty repetitive but good and was shorter than expected.
I also recently finished a digital drawing I worked on and off for a while so felt accomplished. Also did a movement class for a whole day that was a experiece . Havent got too do that much animating but worked on anticpation and follow through as well as experiementing with gravity through line test and with maya.
This has gotten combined into two posts since I forgot to post it.
This week beginning the 26th I did some experimentation on the movement of lifting and anticipation. And took part in a exercise of simulating what it would be like to lift a heavy object which gave me a video reference of said action. After doing a animatic line test I then proceeded to replicate it in Maya.
Character analysis of my creature that I made.
The first creature I made was a lot more simplistic not really differentiating itself away from the original bouncing ball line test I did earlier. I wanted to try experiment with a mullet type hair style on this weird circle dog thing I made. I wanted it to be cuteish for appeal but show sore/raw eyes that would be alarming when the hair that covered have of the creature eventually moved away from its face. I eventually decided it wasn't challenging enough or really creative enough.
I started drawing and ended up with something that would be cute but also had more slightly unsettling or weird features like for example the fingers sprouting out from underneath it which it uses to move. Its overall body shape is still reminiscent of a circle but with two strong wings to propel it of the ground, which I added possibly because I had been playing bloodbourne and it reminds me of these carrion crows.
The creature that I will name Gregg the destroyer is a stoic bird monster which hates to underestimated due to it being a lot smaller than the rest of its kind having constant cutesy blush marks on its cheek. He proclaims he is a merciless killer always expanding his wings to appear larger despite never killing anything but nevertheless having the ability and brutal intent when backed into a corner. A proficient martial arts practitioner the only creature to go beyond a black belt and receive a thicker white belt from chuck norris as a sign of purity and overall mastery of the arts. Often to lazy to go ahead and kill the countless amount of female intruders that break into his 240million pound mansion(that he inherited from his distant cousin) wanting to pet him and kidnap hip due to insanely hypnotic death stare that he gives when not amused. He subdues them with his special eye hypnosis instead making them his loyal attendants and guards. Only willing to release them on the condition that they can beat him in a series of intellectual battles through various games which he suspects some of not being under his hynotic influence they fail on purpose to live in his mansion rent free and just to be around which he tolerates as he is cool like that. Gregg has a large amount of ambition and beliefs he is quite influential from the large following he has and the large amount of twitter followers he has. Following this he plans to take over the world with his trained band of hypnotised ninja female stalkers at his disposable he knows that the only thing that stands in his way is time which is something he plans to rule over after taking over the planet earth. He is also a fan of cheesecake and game of thrones and almost went ahead with his plan to kidnap george r.r martin when he wanted to appear in the books and episode but decided against it as his presence would only complicate things further when all would undoubtedly unite under him and place him on the iron throne, which he beliefs would be too much pressure right now.
part of gregg line test some frames missing done with a tablet
My first week at my ual MA character animation course. So after a lot of effort to get on to the course I began my lesson after making a cool enterance by coming in late with another pupil. The first assignment was a small line test due the next week which was slighlty challenging as I had never really animated in 2d properly. Secondly I spent time with class mates on a shadow puppet animation based in a strange place it went quite well.
Lastly I went mcdonalds too and got a free cheeseburger that was cool, I also found out about the free coffee from waitrose that was also cool I like free stuff...the end.
